As we leave the holiday madness behind us and ease into 2025, it’s hard to ignore the societal pressure to craft the perfect New Year’s resolution. But let’s get real—resolutions can often feel more like obligations than opportunities. If you’re like me, they can quickly become intimidating, draining, or even a source of guilt if progress stalls. Instead of setting a resolution, what if you embraced something simpler yet more powerful: a one-word or one-phrase theme for the year?

I have found that choosing a theme offers a refreshing alternative. It creates space for creativity, whimsy, and fun while providing guidance for your choices and goals throughout the year. Unlike a rigid resolution, a theme evolves with you. It’s not a box to check; it’s a lens through which you view your year. Added bonus– it’s easier to remember than a list of resolutions. It has what I like to call the “sticky” factor because it does just that, it sticks in our brains.

Finding Your Word or Phrase for 2025

Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips to help you uncover your perfect theme:

  1. Reflect on Your Wins and Challenges: Look back at 2024. What worked well for you? What felt draining?
  2. Consider What Brings You Joy: Think about the activities, people, and moments that light you up. How can your theme incorporate more of these?
  3. Identify Your Priorities: What do you want more (or less) of in your life? Clarity? Growth? Peace? Use these reflections to identify a guiding focus for the year ahead that aligns with your top priorities.
  4. Experiment and Play: Don’t overthink it! What are you curious about? What do you want to explore in 2025? Write down words or short phrases that resonate with you and see what feels right.
  5. Test It Out: Once you’ve found your word or phrase, try it on for size. Does it feel energizing? Does it make you smile? If yes, you’ve found your theme!

My Word for 2025: Intentional

This year, I’ve chosen intentional as my guiding word. For me, being intentional means thoughtfully deciding how I use my energy and time. It’s about surrounding myself with people who uplift and inspire me, prioritizing reading for pleasure, and tuning in to the way I talk to myself. It’s about saying “yes” to the projects and opportunities that align with my goals and values and to listen to my body when I make these decisions. It’s also about saying “no” to those that don’t.

In a world full of distractions, intentionality helps create focus and joy. It ensures that I’m not just busy but purposeful. Whether it’s in my professional endeavors, personal relationships, or self-care routines, this word reminds me to stay true to what truly matters.

Your Turn to Get Creative

This year, skip the resolutions and give yourself permission to dream a little. A single word or phrase can hold immense power, guiding your decisions and inspiring your days. Whether you choose a word like “balance,” “adventure,” or “gratitude,” or a phrase like “be bold” or “find the joy,” your theme can be a playful yet profound way to shape your year.

I’d also encourage you to put that word somewhere you will be reminded of it daily. Maybe it’s saving it as your screen saver on your computer or phone. Maybe it’s an automated text reminder a few times throughout your day. Maybe it’s a beautiful piece of art or piece of jewelry with your word included.

Here’s to making 2025 a year filled with creativity, connection, and purpose—one intentional moment at a time!
