There are some things we’ve learned living in Southern Nevada.
1) Avoid The Strip at all costs (it has the worst traffic) 2) a car without A/C in the summer is a car unfit for a human being 3) you NEVER plan an outdoor party in July; and 4) when our economy gets hit, it gets hit hard.
This last lesson was one that had devastating consequences for thousands of families in Southern Nevada. You never quite appreciate employment until it seems that no one in the Valley has any. What we did appreciate, however, was the work of the Goodwill of Southern Nevada. They provided job training, job search tools, career advice, counseling, job leads, bus passes, interview clothing, employment cards, tools, rental assistance, and free tax preparation assistance. They provided what we desperately needed, by providing education, employment and training for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.
In this last year alone, 1,800 people (and 1,800 families) have found employment because of the good work that Goodwill preforms. They have found stability, confidence, and independence—which is so much more than a paycheck can buy.
